ChemFinder Usage Restrictions
We are pleased to be able to offer ChemFinder as a free service,
and we intend to continue to do so for the foreseeable future as long as its
benefits outweigh its costs to us.
In order to keep ChemFinder as useful as possible to as many people
as possible, we have had to impose some general restrictions. These restrictions
are generally designed to keep one person from hogging the server:
ChemINDEX is a commercial
service that provides the same database as is available on ChemFinder
with more-generous searching restrictions. If you are finding ChemFinder
to be too restrictive, you should consider purchasing ChemINDEX.
ChemFinder database is one of the databases included with
ChemOffice Ultra
for Windows. It has none of the restrictions listed below.
PLEASE NOTE: We can identify usage only by the information that is
provided to us. In particular, if your site is served by a firewall or 'gatekeeper'
machine, it is likely that everyone at your site will appear as one
person to us. In that case, the restrictions discussed here apply to your entire site
as a whole, and not on a per-person basis.
We realize that some projects require brief spikes in usage, and that you may on
occasion need to exceed these restrictions for a day or two. We are very amenable
to working with you to allow this -- IF you contact us first and
ask for permission. You can expect that egregious violations of these restrictions
will result in sitewide termination of access to ChemFinder.

Restrictions to search queries
|
It is very easy to create searches that can return an arbitrarily large number of hits,
and a query that returns thousands (or tens of thousands) of hits is not particularly
useful. The following search types have restrictions:
- Name contains: at least 7 letters required
- Name ends with: at least 7 letters required
- Name starts with: at least 3 letters required
- Structure contains: only full-structure searches permitted
If a query is posed that violates these restrictions, ChemFinder will
return a message that the query is 'too broad'.
ChemINDEX is a commercial service
that provides the same database as is available on ChemFinder with more-generous searching.
If you are finding ChemFinder to be too restrictive, you
should consider purchasing ChemINDEX.
Additionally, the version of the database sold with ChemOffice Ultra does not have these restrictions.

Restrictions to number of hits returned
|
Even with the restrictions on some types of queries, it is still possible to hitlists
containing thousands of compounds. For any given search, ChemFinder will
return a maximum of 25 hits. There is no way to retrieve more than the first 25 hits for
a given query; however, a more-specific query might return fewer total hits and therefore
give access to other compounds.

purchasing ChemINDEX.
Additionally, the version of the database sold with ChemOffice Ultra does not have this restriction.

Restrictions to the number of searches per day
|
We trust that everyone will be considerate in their use of this resource. Although there
are technically no limitations to the number of searches per day, we do reserve the right
to enforce limits in extreme cases. Please if you
expect to be making more than 100 searches per day.

restrictions. If you are finding ChemFinder to be too restrictive,
you should consider purchasing ChemINDEX.
Additionally, the version of the database with ChemOffice Ultra necessarily does not
have restrictions on the number of searches it allows. If you are doing hundreds of
queries per day, you will find the performance of your own copy of the database to
be a significant improvement over the WWW version as well.
